Six Helpful Pointers For Learning To Play Guitar Solos

Six Helpful Pointers For Learning To Play Guitar Solos Suzy S. What kind of preparation, thought, and practice goes into creating the best guitar solos? Take these six tips from Austin guitar teacher Samuel B. and youll be well on your way to guitar glory In reality, theres probably no way to effectively teach someone to improvise. At this point in the curriculum, the student is ready to begin exploring that mysterious terrain known as expression. Though the parameters (an understanding of guitar scales and corresponding keys) are necessities, youll be on your own at this point in ways in which you have not previously been. The good news is you will have already learned whole songs that youre now ready to jazz up with advanced touches. While artistry (virtually by definition) is something that should be met with minimal-to-no interference, Ive included pointers that should provide friendly encouragement to accompany your early development as a soloist. There are no right or wrong notes. Though youll want to remain firmly entrenched within the confines of a single scale (which you will have learned at the beginning of your guitar lessons) what you play is really up to you. Some notes do of course sound better than others, but the trick here is to create a melody as you would while singing to yourself. I  recommend starting with three notes only. After a while, youll be in a position to branch out. Envisioning what you want to play a few seconds ahead of time will improve your delivery. On more than one occasion, it was brought to my attention that the best guitar solos are the ones for which a mental map has been created. Understand that youre using your instrument as a means of communicating an internal message one that transcends the boundaries of spoken language. Your job is to articulate that message not with words but rather with a sequence of notes. Youre responsible for determining the sequence that best articulates your internal cadences. You can learn a lot by listening. “You can observe a lot by watching” is sage advice attributable to baseball legend Yogi Berra. Playing a great solo is a comparable feat of conscious imitation. The trick is here is to imagine yourself in the shoes of whichever guitar heroes youve picked as role models and to try and follow the thought patterns that inspired their specific choices of notes. This way, youll learn to implement those patterns in your own playing. There will always be new tricks to learn. While waiting for a student to arrive, I find myself puttering with a note pattern that was likely inspired by my fondness for the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Though Ive been a guitarist for nearly a quarter of a century, Im finding the specific pieces of his unique brand of musical bombast very difficult to assemble and imitate. Multiple tricks of unfamiliarity (quick changes in tempo for instance) play into the equation. Always be open to new ideas. Ever since I was a teenager, Ive made a point of not restricting my solos to a mere recitation of the notes of a scale. Ive combined notes (playing more than one at a time) and even bent them with the same finger. Ive also branched out into enharmonic ones on either side of whichever position corresponds to the solo effectively allowing my left hand to dance up and down the neck a bit. Accept no limitations. Im convinced that all of us have a tendency to impose limits on our speed, dexterity, fluidity, and knowledge. In other words, we have an innate desire to reach a certain plateau (a musical one in this case) and coast. The truth is that nothing is more potentially damaging to ones musicianship than coasting. Knowledge and skills are two things that should be steadily and actively pursued. Samuel B. teaches beginner  guitar lessons in Austin, TX. He teaches lessons face-to-face without sheet music, which is his adaptation of Japanese instruction (involving a call-and-response method).  Learn more about Samuel here! How to Identify Voice Types Subtypes

How to Identify Voice Types Subtypes Suzy S. Are you a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass? Learn how to determine your voice type in this guest post by Ann Arbor, MI voice teacher  Elaina R So, you want to figure out your own voice type. You probably just want to know whether you are a soprano, alto, tenor, or bass. Unfortunately, things are a little more complicated than that. The good news? It doesn’t matter as much as you think. Before you rush to the keyboard to try to figure out your voice type, keep two things in mind. First of all, how old are you? If you are under 20 (or under 22 or so if you are male), your current range is still in progress. It will likely continue to change as you get older, so you can’t figure out your voice type for a few more years. Second of all, have you had any vocal training? If not, your vocal range can change drastically as you learn how to use your voice. I can’t tell you how many times women have come into my studio insisting that they are altos, only to unlock entire octaves of range they didn’t know they had! That being said, here we go! Voice Types and Subtypes There are five broad categories of voice types: two for women and three for men. I’m using operatic voice types here, because they are the most specific than other classifications, but Ive given pop examples of each voice type as well. Soprano Soprano is the highest voice type. Even the lowest types of sopranos can sing C6 (6th C on the keyboard, counting from the bottom,) or “high C.” The highest sopranos can sing well above that. Pop music sopranos include Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, and Ellie Goulding. These voices have a lighter tambour and easy access to high notes. These are the operatic soprano subsections, in order of highest to lowest. If you listen, you’ll see just how much variety there is under the one title of soprano â€" and the other voice types as well. • Coloratura soprano (example: Lucia Popp. And me.) • Soubrette • Lyric soprano (example: Renée Fleming) • Dramatic soprano (example: Christine Goerke) Mezzo-Soprano Mezzo-sopranos are women with lower voices. They are referred to as altos in the choir world. Some women with extra-low voices are referred to as contraltos. Some mezzo sopranos can sing C6 (and rarely even higher), but most of them top out before C6. In popular music, singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Adele are mezzo-sopranos. The mezzo-soprano subsections, in order of highest to lowest, are: • Coloratura mezzo-soprano (example: Isabel Leonard) • Lyric mezzo-soprano • Dramatic mezzo-soprano • Contralto (this is actually a separate category, but I’ve combined it here because of its rarity. Example: Larissa Diadkova) Tenor Tenors are high-voiced men. They can typically sing up to a B4 in full voice; some of them can sing higher. Examples of tenors in popular music include Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and Adam Levine â€" look for easy high notes and some falsetto. There are more subsections for male voices than female voices, so here are some of them (highest to lowest): • Countertenor (this is also technically a separate category for men who sing predominantly in head voice, but it is rare. Hear it here.) • Leggero tenor (example: Luciano Pavarotti) • Lyric tenor • Spinto tenor • Dramatic tenor (example: Giuseppe Giacomini) Baritone Baritones are halfway between tenors and basses. Even the highest baritones typically can’t hit a C4, or ‘high C,” but they can sing down to a G2 or lower. Examples of baritones in popular music include Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Here are some of the more common baritone types (highest to lowest): • Lyric baritone (example: Mariusz Kwiecien) • Verdi baritone • Dramatic baritone (example: Juan Pons) Bass Basses are the lowest male voice type. To be honest, I can’t think of a single one in popular music (maybe Louis Armstrong). Looks like it’s high time we had one! Basses can sing down to E2 or lower, and their highest notes are around E4 in chest voice. In the operatic world, here are some of the subsections: • Bass-baritone (example: Luca Pisaroni) • Basso buffo • Lyric basso profundo • Dramatic basso profundo (example: Matti Salminen) Still confused about voice types? Check out the video below for some helpful pointers about how to find yours! Combination Voice Types You can’t pigeonhole voices very easily, since they tend to be versatile and many of the above voice types overlap in range. In the end, it’s more a matter of the tambour of the voice, what the voice sounds best singing, and what repertoire the vocalist prefers. For example, I call myself a light lyric coloratura â€" I can sing very high, but I also sing plenty of lower repertoire. Some people just call themselves zwichen fach, which means they fluctuate between voice types. If you listen to some of the examples above and explore your range using a keyboard and good vocal technique, you may be able to figure out your voice type. Knowing your broad voice type can help you choose music that feels â€" and sounds â€" good in your voice. Curious about more specifics? Talk to a voice teacher! It can be hard enough sometimes trying to encourage a child to sit down and do there homework. Imagine convincing them to take a bus or walk along to a tutor's home to do it!You can teach in any room that's suitable. (Source: ErikaWittlieb)With the tutor coming to them, they just have to get out their pens and books and wait for their tutor to arrive.Even if a student is waiting for you to arrive, make sure you tell them that they have to be ready at a certain time. The last thing you want is to waste the first five or ten minutes of your tutoria l because they're scrambling around looking for their homework or their textbook! This type of academic support is useful for plenty of different subjects including maths, physics, biology, chemistry, English, French, Spanish, German, etc. From a practical point of view, the student doesn’t have to waste time on public transport and they can study in a suitable environment. On the other hand, the parents will have to pay slightly more since the tutor’s rates will have been calculated taking the transport costs into account.Private tutorials at a student’s house are also a good way to make students feel more at home (literally). Some students struggle with studying in an unfamiliar environment and to make your life and your student's life easier, you want to make them feel as comfortable as possible. So how can you help a student who’s struggling before their first tutorial’s even started?Another huge advantage of travelling to the student’s house is that you have the option to also teach primary school children who’d otherwise need to be taken to your house or take public transport on their own. Those who are very young probably wouldn’t be able to traverse larger cities.Find reputable online teaching jobs here. What Are the Disadvantages of Teaching at the Student’s House? It’s midday and I’ve an hour-long maths tutorial. I have to leave at half past to get to my student’s house for two in the afternoon.Sometimes you’ll be expected to travel long distances if you live in some of the larger cities in the UK.If you don't have a car, getting to your student's house mightn't be worth it. (Source: Didgeman)If you earn £20 or £25 the hour, it can quickly become half that amount once you’ve considered how much travelling you’ve done.I used to teach science tutorials and I was wasting so much time travelling to teach just one student. It’s was worrying because I couldn’t make the student pay double. That’s one of the main problems with teaching a student at their home.Secondary school students tend to have busy schedules (especially when they're doing their GCSEs and A Levels) and are rarely available for some of the most common working hours during the week.Private tutorials need to work around the student’s schedule. As a result, you may be expected to offer tutorials during evenings, weekends, school holidays, and bank holidays. In other words, a private tutor tends to work when everyone else isn’t working. Academic support is often presented as a way to help a student improve their grades, better understand certain aspects of their classes, and revise for exams and do test prep.Even experienced tutors aren’t miracle workers. How can you teach a student who has literally no interest in learning?Wouldn’t it be better to try a different approach? You could teach your classes outside in a relaxing public place like a library, cafe, etc. Of course, if your student’s an adult, a quiet pub could be ideal. Of course, it goes without saying:  You can’t take primary school students to the pub!If the weather's nice, there's nothing stopping you from taking your tutorial outside! (Source: cocoparisienne)Some subjects, like foreign languages, can be taught almost anywhere. It’s much nicer learning French or Spanish in a nice café or outside in the sun when the weather’s nice. How would you plan for your first lessons outdoors?Academic Support Tutorials at the Tutor’s HousePrivate tutors living in big cities should be able to find tutees throughout the whole year. What about those living in smaller towns or the country? If you live in the countryside and have an internet connection, you could always teach online tutorials. (Source: 12019)Even in towns with a population between 20,000 and 30,000 inhabitants, finding a private tutor can be quite difficult because there aren’t many tutors about, especially for rarer subjects.  It can be even more difficult in the countryside to find one on one tutoring. In some cases, tutors can teach tutorials at their own home. While most people think that home tutoring takes place in the student's house, in some cases, it can be better to get help with your studies at the tutor's house because they can set up a dedicated classroom in their house or flat.Childminders can also tutor the children they’re looking after.  After all, learning games with very young children are basically like private tutorials for the young. A childminder could also help a child do their homework before their parents pick them up. Becoming a private tutor for young children could help childminders find more work and earn more money.Teaching academic support tutorials online is another way to do it. Naturally, such lessons must be planned meticulously...Offering Online Tutoring ServicesIt doesn’t matter where you live, you can offer one on one private tutoring to anyone in the country via webcam. This is a learning approach that suits children living in rural areas. It can be difficult to find a tutor for students in smaller towns and villages where there are so few inhabitants that one to one tutoring and private tuition wouldn't be viable. The digital revolution has changed the private tutorials market by letting children and adults living in villages with fewer than 100 inhabitants learn. This means that there are academic tutoring jobs available to everyone with a decent internet connection. That said, it can cost you more to get started as an online tutor as you'll need to make sure your internet connection is fast enough and maybe even upgrade it. You'll also need to invest in a decent webcam and a microphone or a headset. While many laptops come with these built in, they're usually not very good.Remote learning means that the student doesn’t have to be in the same physical location as the tutor. How do you do it? How do I get paid? The simplest way is to get paid via bank transfer or PayPal. You could also get paid by cheq ue, but this will take much longer. You could also create an academic support website where your students can pay online for your tutorials like they would any other product on an online shop. For students who need help with languages, one on one tutoring over webcam is great because you can still speak with the learner. If they need to succeed in a speaking exam, you could consider scheduling intensive speaking sessions. For students struggling with calculus, geometry, trigonometry, and algebra, there are plenty of useful online resources for mathematics tutors. Don't worry that your student isn't in the same room as you, an online tutor can use software to correct homework or an assignment remotely. For students that need general academic coaching or help with their studies, an online tutor can be useful for providing important feedback on their work, set them tasks to do, and schedule regular mentoring sessions.Don't forget that in addition to choosing the right place to be tutored, you need to be confident in your choice of tutor. To find the best tutors and guarantee academic success, you should keep in mind that most tutors on Superprof offer free tutoring for the first hour. Get the most of this hour by discussing how your child is doing in school, what their instructor can offer them in terms of study skills, and have them sit down with your child so that they can work out their strengths and weaknesses. Now enjoy more ideas for giving home tutorials!

This wise saying points to the resilient heart of Spanish culture, that even if an obstacle appears insurmountable at first, you can overcome it! No hay mal que por bien no venga. Literal translation: There’s nothing bad that doesn’t occur in the name of a greater good. What it actually means: Every cloud has a silver lining. This is one of our favorite funny Spanish sayings. It points to a belief in Spanish culture that even if an event appears negative, you should trust that it happened for a reason. Life is giving you what you need now, even if it feels rough. You can also attribute it to  the belief in a greater good, or a greater power. Échale ganas. Literal translation: Insert desire. What it actually means: Try your best. Ponte las pilas. Literal translation: Put your batteries on. What it actually means: Work hard. Es mejor pedir perdón que permiso. Literal translation: It’s better to apologize than to ask for permission. What it actually means: Do what you need to do now. Here the attitude is “you better just do what you need to do now and worry about the consequences after,” highlighting another cultural proclivity toward staying in the present moment and doing whatever is needed in that moment. SEE ALSO: 35 Spanish Slang Words Despacio que tengo prisa. Literal translation: Slowly that I’m in a rush. What it actually means: Slower is faster. Many funny Spanish sayings also have a bit of wise advice attached to them. This one suggests that doing what you need to do slowly and thoroughly is more productive in the long-run. Más vale mal por conocido que bueno por conocer. Literal translation: Known evil is better than  unknown good. What it actually means: Be content with what you have now. This saying suggests that known imperfection is better than idealizing a future alternative that may not be too good at all. This is a double-edged sword, however, as staying in your comfort zone can actually prevent you from better options. Él que transa no avanza. Literal translation: He who deceives never advances. What it actually means: Deception never pays off. This rhymes smoothly but only in Spanish. Tirar la casa por la ventana. Literal translation: Throw the house out the window. What it actually means: Roll out the red carpet. This saying is about splurging on special occasions, namely spending a lot of money when the situation warrants it. Mandar a alguien por un tubo. Literal translation: Send someone through a tube. What it actually means: Tell them to shove it. This is about setting limits when people don’t treat you right. Quedarse con los brazos cruzados. Literal translation: Staying with your arms crossed. What it actually means: He/she froze. SEE ALSO: 36 Popular Spanish Slang Words This is when someone gets paralyzed and doesn’t act when they need to. Caras vemos corazones no sabemos. Literal translation: We see faces but we don’t know hearts. What it actually means: Don’t judge a book by its cover. This isnt one of the funny things to say in Spanish, but rather something more serious. It means that you should realize things arent always the way they appear. Mejor solo que mal acompañado. Literal translation: It’s better to be alone than in bad company. What it actually means: It’s okay to be alone sometimes. This saying reminds people to take care of themselves in relationships. De golosos y tragones, están llenos los panteones. Literal translation: Cemeteries are full of greedy people. What it actually means: Care for others or else. This saying works in English but doesn’t rhyme at all. Camarón que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente. Literal translation: A shrimp that sleeps is carried away by the current. What it actually means: You snooze, you lose. Here, again, the rhyme is lost in translation but its a good reminder to seize opportunties as they come your way. Más vale un pájaro en mano que ciento uno volando. Literal translation: One bird in hand is better than 100 birds flying. What it actually means: A bird in hand is worth two in a bush. The meaning behind this message is simple: you already have something thats guaranteed yours, so dont be greedy and try to grab two more that may or may not be yours. Se puso hasta las chanclas. Literal translation: He/she put themselves up to the sandals. What it actually means: He/she got hammered. There are many funny Spanish phrases that have to do with drinking. Use this one when you have a friend who got a little too carried away the night before! Palabras necias, oídos sordos. Literal translation: Annoying words, deaf ears. What it actually means: If you don’t have anything positive to say, don’t say anything at all. Nobody likes to listen to someone nagging, so its better to keep quiet! Entre la espada y la pared. Literal translation: Between the sword and the wall. What it actually means: Between a rock and a hard place. This describes a difficult situation where no matter what you do, it feels like the wrong choice. Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho. Literal translation: There’s a giant gap between the saying and the action. What it actually means: It’s easier said than done. Sometimes its easier to talk about an action getting done than to physically carry it out. Se fue de Guatemala a Guata-peor. Literal translation: It went from Guate-bad to Guata-worse. What it actually means: Things went from bad to worse. This play on words is clearly compromised in the translation, as the original saying in Spanish uses the country Guatemala, which has the word “bad” in its last two syllables. Entre broma y broma la verdad se asoma. Literal translation: Between jokes and jokes, the truth lurks. What it actually means: Jokes can reveal truths. The beautiful rhyming in Spanish is again lost in the English translation. RELATED: 50 Beautiful Spanish Words Now let’s look at some funny Spanish phrases and jokes to share with your friends! ¿Qué le dijo un pez a otro pez? Nada. Translation: What did one fish say to another? Nada. The word nada in Spanish can refer to the command to swim, or the word nothing. So this joke is a play-on-words Hay dos palabras que te abrirán muchas puertas: Empuje y jale. Translation: There are two words that will open many doors for you: push and pull. This hilarious little joke is another play-on-words in Spanish. ¿Qué le dijo una ganza a la otra? Venganza Translation: What did one goose say to the other? Revenge. If you separate the first syllable ven,  meaning come, from the next two, ganza meaning goose, you’ll see that the joke’s answer simultaneously reads, come goose and the word revenge. Clearly, this joke does not work in English, so if it were translated in a movie, the subtitles wouldn’t capture it well, no matter how skilled the translator is. Talk about a dad joke! Se encuentran dos abogados y uno le dice al otro: - ¿Vamos a tomar algo? -Bueno ¿de quién? Translation: There are two lawyers and one says to the other: -“Let’s get a drink.” -“Yes. From who?” In Spanish the verb tomar (“to take”) is also used to mean “to drink,” so the lawyers are “taking a drink” and “taking something from someone” simultaneously. This highlights the cultural  tendency to view lawyers as corrupt, opportunistic, and greedy. ¡Te dije que me gustan las películas viejas y buenas y tú me llevaste a una película de viejas buenas! Translation: “I told you I liked good and old movies, but you took me to see a movie with pretty women!” This play-on-words is especially complicated. While vieja means old, it also refers to a woman, and while buena usually means good, it can also mean attractive when referring to a person. Now that you know these sayings, you wont feel confused if you hear them in conversation! Good luck with your Spanish studies and learning the intricacies of this fascinating language and culture. Students Thrive When Theyre Not Isolated, Community Rolls Up Its Sleeves

Students Thrive When They’re Not Isolated, Community Rolls Up Its Sleeves Students Thrive When They’re Not Isolated, Community Rolls Up Its Sleeves Students Thrive When They’re Not Isolated, Community Rolls Up Its Sleeves September 1, 2015 By Emily Elliott, Executive Director Below is my two-minute response to the prompt “What Matters Most in Education,” shared recently with candidates for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education during a recent Community Conversation hosted by MeckEd. What matters most to me in public education is that our students in need are not isolated and that every child has the opportunity to fully realize his/her potential. This cannot be a “my children vs. other people’s children” question in Charlotte. What I can add to the conversation is what I see on a day-to-day basis which is how often that when people are asked “Will you be a volunteer tutor? Will you spend an hour per week to help a student who is struggling, who is not your child?” â€" how often people say YES. Hundreds of people are willing to help â€" business people, young professionals, community volunteers, college students. Many have no other interaction with public schools on a regular basis â€" 70% of Heart volunteers, actually â€" but they are rolling up their sleeves and care DEEPLY about Charlotte’s children. When in the schools, they see great things â€" talented teachers, hard-working administrators. They are also asking questions: Why is my student this far behind? Clearly, he can learn. We cannot let ourselves get used to the numbers â€" that more than half of economically disadvantaged students are not proficient in math and reading. In many ways, community members reduce isolation. Xavier now knows someone who works in a tall building downtown and has plans to do so himself. When we ask what he will do in the tall building, he says, “I’m going to own it!” I share this both as a bright spot â€" people care about this â€" but also to tell elected officials, please know, when you are making decisions about resource allocation and school assignments, please know that there is will, there is increasing knowledge, and there is LOVE of students whose odds are stacked against them. I see it every day. The community is behind you and is watching, and your work is urgent.

How Your College-Bound Teen Can Make it a Productive Holiday Break

How Your College-Bound Teen Can Make it a Productive Holiday Break College is an essential step toward lifelong success, but getting there doesnt happen on its own. Huntington Learning Center says that too often, college-related deadlines have a way of sneaking up on studentsbut holiday break is a great time to revisit the college to-do list. The spring semester of the school year tends to fly by for high school students, especially those finishing up their senior year. For those with college on the horizon, its important to pay attention to all of the necessary deadlines and tasks. These next few weeks offer a perfect opportunity to get things in order and plan ahead for the months to come.Start working on the FAFSA. Seniors planning on enrolling in college for fall 2017 should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1 as possible. This application is your familys avenue to receiving federal, state and college financial aid and the sooner you submit it, the better. Get started at www.studentaid.ed.gov. Register for Advanced Placement exams. Before school lets out, your teen should talk to teachers or the schools designated Advanced Placement (AP) coordinator about taking any AP exams in the spring. In 2017, AP exams are scheduled for early May, so holiday break is a good time to start thinking about which exams your teen wants to study for and take. Register for the spring SAT or ACT. For juniors taking the exam for the first time, now is the time to develop a study schedule for the February 11 or May 6 SAT and March 11 or April 8 ACT. Contact Huntington over the break to learn more about our 14-hour, 32-hour and Premier SAT and ACT prep programs. Work on college applications. Seniors should use holiday break as a time to get going on college applications, as many colleges have application deadlines as early as January 1. At the very least, your senior should spend time working on some of the time-consuming parts of the application package, such as the essay. Its also a good idea to write succinct but professional letters to teachers from whom your teen would like letters of recommendation, making sure to include a resume and list of accomplishments in each teachers class. When school is back in session in January, your teen can deliver these letters personally. Visit local colleges. Although colleges are also on break, this might be a good chance for you and your teen to visit any colleges in your area. Walk the campus, stop by the admissions offices, explore the classrooms and reach out ahead of time to see if any tours are offered. Holiday break is a wonderful time for your teen to recharge his or her batteries after a busy fall semester, but it also presents a chance to get ahead on that college checklist. At Huntington, we advise students to take advantage of every break they have from school and use that downtime to ensure theyre on top of everything they need to be regarding college. During the spring, things pick up significantly when it comes to collegefrom applying for financial aid to selecting a college. Encourage your teen to use this time effectively, so that he or she will feel more organized and ready to continue moving forward when school resumes in January.
